Las Olas social media curation

Social media curation? What is that? When I talk to my mechanic about my car, he uses all sorts of words that I don’t understand. That’s fine because he does. And every industry has its words and references that sound like gobbledegook to others. For example, if your business is a restaurant, you understand what a salamander is, or a low-boy or what BOH refers to but the chances are that your doctor wouldn’t – any more than you’d understand medical jargon.

So here I am, frequently referencing our curation services and platforms and there are you saying ‘eh?’ Apologies. I should explain…

Curation is a huge part of social media and yet probably the most misunderstood. We all understand the word curate as meaning – in the sense of a museum or art gallery – to evaluate, select, organize and assemble. Social media curation is the same. The internet is mind-bogglingly huge. If I were to tell you how many websites there are right now, that information would be out of date before I finish this sentence. And how many new blog posts, articles and news reports are added every day?

Search engines do their level best to find that information for us but by necessity, some information is going to be below their radar. A social media curator does exactly the same as a museum curator.

  • We evaluate articles and information – is this of interest to our readers and followers?
  • We select the best, the most informative and relevant information
  • We organize that information
  • We assemble the information and decide what goes to which one (or more) of our many social media platforms

But it’s more than that.  It’s not simply about finding information on Facebook and ‘sharing’ it – although that is curation at its very basic level. The beauty of curation services is that they provide a huge amount of further exposure for you.

  • The use of curation platforms gives us (or rather, your information or article) further exposure on stand-alone sites and services
  • They add to our audience and form yet another platform on which to engage with people who are interested in your business or organization
  • They have their own fans and followers
  • Most encourage sharing so they form another way of spreading your content far and wide
  • Some allow comments or reviews
  • They show a selection of information that encourages viewers to follow us on mainstream social media and visit our website
  • The majority link directly to your article
  • Many supply code freely to anyone to enable others to put our (your) latest news on their own site or blog. We don’t get any notification of this so who knows where your information might be?
  • The information remains on these platforms and is found by search engines
  • Most of these grow into huge online ‘magazines’ and your information stays there
