How can technology and media help our community?

Coming up soon is the third annual Social Good Summit – it will take place on Sept. 22-24 in New York City. This is organized by Mashable, 92nd Street Y, the United Nations Foundation, Ericsson, the United Nations Development Programme and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. To quote:

The event unites a dynamic community of global leaders to discuss a big idea: the power of innovative thinking and technology to solve the world’s greatest challenges. We want YOU to join the conversation with leaders and citizens from around the globe. On September 24, we are inviting people all over the world to connect through local Meetups to answer the same question: “How can new technology and new media create solutions for the biggest problems facing my community?”

Big question.

But we believe that Team Las Olas can and does help the community in many ways by our use of technology and social media. Remember, we mean by ‘our area’ the beach, downtown – anywhere that can be easily accessed from any part of Las Olas (the hub of operations).

  • Team Las Olas promotes a very local, specific area – our community – to the world via our website and our huge social media network
  • We promote the area to visitors and often answer their questions – on social media itself or via email
  • We encourage residents to shop, eat and play in our local area. We believe that every possible dollar should remain right here
  • Non-profits are promoted on our site at absolutely zero cost – so are free events
  • We are completely non-political and non-denominational; we have no agenda other than the growth and success of our wonderful area
  • We want to keep all our readers and followers up to date with the very latest news about the area
  • We frequently write articles about the history of our area. Not only is this interesting, it also fosters a sense of pride in our community
  • We constantly accentuate the positive
  • We support ecological and environmental issues, especially those important to our residents and visitors
  • We support and promote the arts. We write about our vision for our area
  • We highlight positive innovations in the area – by means of our social networks, we tell the world
  • We are impartial. We are not funded by any organization or group that might show any bias or prejudice
But our question to you is, what more can we do? What would you like to see us do? How do you think that we can offer even more help to our community? We want to know. Please help us to help the community.
